A Monaghan councillor has raised her concerns over the condition of local roads after works are carried out by Irish Water. Speaking at this month's meeting of Monaghan County Council, Sinn Féin's Cllr Cathy Bennett highlighted her anger over a number of local roads which, she said, were left in "dire states" after Irish Water conducted underground works on sewage systems.
According to Cllr Bennett, Irish Water has not yet come back to finish re-surfacing works on the roads, which she added, "were left ripped-up" despite the fact that Monaghan County Council only carried out sufficent repair works a number of years ago.
When asked who the responsibility lay with, Monaghan County Council's Gareth McMahon stated that when sewage works were carried out, under regulation Irish Water has a duty to leave roads up to design standard when the works are completed. He added that on some occasions, 'temporary' works are carried out, before Irish Water returns to complete the repairs.
