Monaghan becomes latest local authority to pass motion supporting victim's rights

A similar motion was passed at a recent Cavan County Council meeting by TP O'Reilly.

Monaghan County Council has become the latest Local Authority to pass a motion supporting victims' rights campaigner Amy Barrett.

Amy Barrett was abused by her father, who was sentenced to ten years in prison in 2017.

She told Shannonside Northern Sound that while he faced "no waiting lists" for psychological supports in prison, victims of abuse can face waiting lists of anywhere from three to 18 months.

Councillor Aoife McCooey raised the motion at a recent Monaghan County Council meeting, requesting that victims of sexual abuse receive free psychological support and counselling after their court cases ends.

A similar motion was passed at last month's Cavan County Council meeting by TP O'Reilly.
