The latest nationwide survey by business group Irish Business Against Litter showed that Monaghan is among the country's cleanest towns.
The town rose to 6th position in the ranking of 40 towns and cities while Cavan, is again clean, but has slipped from 7th to 12th place.
Chair of Monaghan Tidy Towns, Eimear Brennan, told Shannonside Northernsound that there is "a marked improvement" in the town's clean status.
She says these latest results are very positive and have instilled confidence and determination in those who regularly engage in clean ups in Monaghan town.
She added that the local authority also provided help and support to addresses problematic areas.
"Teamwork really wins out. It's the perfect example of that. We seven A grades, two B+'s and a B. If we can raise those B+'s to A's will be top three at least so that's what we're aiming for".
