Minister says new funding is just the start of investment in the outdoors

Close to €236,000 will be used to enhance local mountain trails, forest walks, lakes, rivers, and greenways in Cavan and Monaghan.

The Rural Development Minister says today's funding is just the start of the investment in the outdoors.

189 projects across the country are sharing in almost €3.5 million through the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Fund.

Close to €236,000 will be used to enhance local mountain trails, forest walks, lakes, rivers, and greenways in Cavan and Monaghan.

Making the announcement, Minister Heather Humphreys said there's more to come for outdoor projects.

A full breakdown of the funding can be found below:

Co Monaghan:

  • Boat House & Slipway at Lough Major, Ballybay: €20,000 to carry out upgrades and provide a safe launching point to the lake.
  • Killyvaghan Lake, Ballybay: €20,000 to upgrade and resurface the carpark and provide seating and a wildflower area.
  • Onomy Walk, Castleblayney: €20,000 to create a new walkway along the old golf course, linking to an existing walkway.
  • Point Black Island, Castleblayney: €20,000 to fund an outdoor educational space to enhance children’s appreciation of nature. The development will serve as a multi-functional space that may be utilised as an outdoor play area/outdoor sensory space.
  • Dromlona Lake, Rockcorry: €20,000 for improvements to the laneway at Dromlona Lake to provide greater access.
  • Derrygooney: €17,052.62 to resurface the pathway to Derrygooney lake.
  • Hollywood, Scotstown: €19,530 in funding To repair and enhance the existing nature trail within Hollywood Park

County Cavan:

  • Killeshandra Camino Calling: €20,000 to enhance the Killeshandra Camino, including the installation of seating and other amenities to improve the experience of walkers and tourists.
  • Killykeen Greenway Phase II: This €20,000 project will allow for the undertaking of a route options assessment and preliminary design for Phase II of the Killykeen Greenway Cycle Route at Killeshandra.
  • Lough an Leagh: This investment of over €19,000 will see the upgrading of the amenity area and the provision of a meeting, information and picnic area at Mohercrom, Kingscourt.
  • County Cavan Trails Promotion: Funding of €20,000 for the promotion and marketing of the range of outdoor recreation opportunities available in County Cavan:
  • Wayfinding & Countryside Access Signage Strategy: To engage a tourism design team to research, design and produce a Wayfinding and Countryside Access Signage Plan for County Cavan: €20,000
