Cathaoirleach of Monaghan County Council, Cathy Bennett has descried Minister Heather Humphreys as a "role model" following her shock decision to step away from local and national politics. Heather Humphreys did a "great job" according to Cllr Bennett but this is "no more" than is expected when you're in that role she also pointed out.
Speaking on this morning's Joe Finnegan Show, Cllr Bennett said that Minister Humphreys "delivered" for Cavan and Monaghan and is someone that she "looks up to as a woman." She added that, women should aspire to take up roles like Minister Humphreys and get involved in politics. "
"Heather did a great job and I have to say that I look up to her as a woman. I think she's been a fantastic role model for women and I'm always encouraging more women to get involved in politics through my role within the Monaghan Women's Assembly. However, I just want to reiterate that Heather's work was what was expected of her in that role, just as it would be expected from any Sinn Fein representative in that position."
