Permission has been granted for the development of a new community centre in Magheracloone. Saint Gobain Mining submitted its application to replace the facilities lost after subsidence in 2018.
The old community centre and GAA grounds were condemned and demolished after sink-holes opened in Drumgossett in September 2018. A plan for replacement facilities was agreed between Community Centre representatives and Gyproc's parent company, Saint-Gobain Mining.
The plans were put to local residents in July 2021, with 93 per cent voting in favour. At the start of this year, a planning application was submitted for the development, with Monaghan County Council recently approving the plans, subject to conditions.
In August, Magheracloone Mitchells held their first match on their new pitch - which was also constructed by the mining company. Plans for an open cast mine on the old pitch and community centre site remain before Monaghan County Council, as further information was requested in April on the environmental impact of the works.
