Minimum unit pricing drives alcohol sales across the border

The Derrylin store has seen a huge increase in cross-border sales.

Border businesses have seen a "huge drive" in alcohol sales since the introduction of minimum unit pricing.

That's according to Niamh Curry of McDade's Centra and off-sales in Derrylin which is located on the Fermanagh/Cavan border.

Speaking on today's Wider View, Niamh revealed that most of the stores clientele now consists of customers travelling from the south to purchase alcohol at a cheaper price.

While the Co Fermanagh Centra store only opened its off-licence in September 2021, Niamh admits that the introduction of alcohol unit pricing back in January has benefited the border business as a whole.

While Niamh "welcomes" the increase in sales, she believes the situation is "unfortunate" and "very hard hitting" for independent off- licences elsewhere in the south:
