A review of the military chaplaincy service is to be carried out following a lengthy campaign by a Monaghan Pastafarian.

For almost two years, John Hamill, a member of the Congregationalist Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, has been calling for the Department of Defence to openly advertise positions.

Currently, all chaplains in the Defence Forces are male and appointed by Bishops.

Last November, Hamill told Shannonside Northern Sound that he’s calling for equality for service members who would like to access other chaplains and for non-Christian chaplains who would like to apply for the job.

In a statement today, Minister Paul Kehoe said a review will be carried out to determine if the current system is discriminatory.
