Midwifery and consultant led maternity services can co-exist in Cavan Hospital, according tothe local INMO representative.
This comes as news over the weekend suggesting that both units will merge later this year was met with criticism and concern.
David Meskill the INMO representative for the region says that Cavan has one of only two MLUs in the country, despite the 2016 National Maternity Strategy stating there would be a minimum of 10 by 2018.
He says that such a closure would be contrary to the strategy and limits the choices of women in the North East.
Referencing Drogheda, David Meskill told Shannonside Northern Sound that it is possible for both units to 'co-exist'. He also feels that the amalgamation of such units would lead to less choice for women in the region when it comes to maternity care.
Local TD for Cavan Monaghan Niamh Smyth has been expressing her opposition to such a move, highlighting the concerns that midwives in the hospital have had to the news.
Deputy Smyth says the service allows for distinct and specialised care and should be retained. Moreover she as stated that they should offer further investment to this service and expand it.
