Michelle Gildernew, the current Sinn Féin MP for Fermanagh-South Tyrone is seeking a nomination from her party to contest the Midlands-North West seat in the upcoming Europen Elections. She made the announcement on the Joe Finnegan Show on Shannonside /Northern Sound this morning.
Michelle Gildernew has been a senior Sinn Féin elected representative for 25 years serving as an MP, an MLA and as Agriculture Minister. She grew up in political family where her parents were involved in the Civil Rights Campaign, particularly around the sectarian allocation of housing at Caledon. She was part of the first Sinn Féin delegation to Downing Street.
She said she will be running mate to her party colleague, the current Sinn Féin MEP for the region, Chris MacManus. On whether, the party can secure two seats in the Midlands-North West "remains to be seen", Michelle Gildernew said. If elected, families, the needs of Irish farmers, maintaining Ireland's veto in foreign affairs and Irish unity will be among her priorities, the politician said.
