A merging of the maternity services in Cavan General Hospital “can’t go ahead” according to the Health Minister.
In the Dáil this afternoon, Simon Harris responded to concerns over the future of the Midwifery Led Unit in the hospital after claims the RCSI Hospitals Group plans to close it.
It was set up on a trial basis in 2004 but the National Maternity Strategy launched in 2016 aims to see the roll out of Midwife led care across the country.
The RCSI Hospitals Group is yet to comment on the reports but Minister Harris says his Department has received no notification.

He’s meeting with midwives in Cavan via video conference tomorrow.
It's already been announced approval has been given for an Advanced Midwife Practitioner role in Cavan General.
Responding to local TD Niamh Smyth in the Dáil this afternoon, Minister Harris said any cut to the maternity services in Cavan will not be allowed.
