A meeting of leading sports executives will take place today to discuss the increasing incidents of racism and violence in sport. The meeting was convened by Minister of State for Sport and Physical Education, Thomas Byrne.
He will hold discussions with the leaders of Ireland's three largest sporting organisations - the GAA, FAI and IRFU - as well as the CEO of Sport Ireland. Minister Byrne said the discussions will centre on how best incidents of racism and violence can be prevented and how to address them.
"There is no point simply condemning actions - which we do - but I think action is required from the governing bodies and from the system as a whole to see where we go. We want to learn what best practice is; we want to see how we can improve things; and how Sport Ireland, our national body, in the sports field can work towards developing a code of conduct for sports and for fans as well," he added.
