Just 22% of women in Cavan and 16% in Monaghan are represented in the local political arena.
On International Women's Day which takes place on the 8th of March next there will be a local focus on the issue to help raise awareness.
Monaghan Women's Assembly is set to host an 'introverted' council meeting and women from across the region are invited to attend.
Cllr Cathy Bennett says the move is an attempt to help women to become more aware of political life as the 2024 Local Election campaign gathers
momentum.
She added that the local arena is a good place for women - who are interested in politics - to set their careers in motion.
"There's so much that women could change for the betterment of women in society and politics if there were more women at the table so that's why I'm always pushing. It should be 50/50. It's hard for me to understand why there hasn't been more women at the table but my whole idea would be to normalise to show that politics is for everyone"
