A Mass of remembrance for the life of the late Garda Gary Sheehan who died in service 40 years ago this month will take place tonight. The Mass will take place in St Joseph's Church in Carrickmacross at 7.30pm. Garda recruit Gary Sheehan and Patrick Kelly died in Leitrim back in 1983. The two men were shot dead by the IRA as they took part in a search operation for kidnapped Quinnsworth CEO Don Tidey.
23-year-old Gary Sheehan from Carrickmacross was one of a number of recruits undergoing training at Templemore, who were sent to supplement the search over a wide area of Derrada Woods outside Ballinamore where he was murdered. Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr PJ O'Hanlon said it is vitally important that the heroics of people like the late Gary Sheehan are remembered.
