Five people had got into trouble in the sea at Inch Strand in Whitegate shortly before 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon.

A man in his 50's has died in the sea off the Cork coast. He was trying to help five people who had got into difficulty in the water at Inch Strand near Midleton. The search and rescue coast guard units at Guileen and Crosshaven, along with the RNLI from Ballycotton and Crosshaven were alerted by the Irish Coastguard in Valentia, County Kerry.

Rescue Helicopter 117 from Waterford was also tasked to go to the scene. Four people were rescued from the water. The man in his 50's, was removed from the sea and was brought to Cork University Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The local coroner has been notified and arrangements will now be made for a post-mortem examination.
