Man charged over murder of his mother in Cavan

The suspect appeared before Judge Raymond Finnegan just before 10am this morning.

A 31-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of his mother, Annie Heyneman at the weekend. The 55-year-old mother-of-five was found dead at her family home on Derrycasan Lane in Kilnavart near Ballyconnell, County Cavan last Saturday night. Her son, Danny Heyneman, appeared at Monaghan District Court charged with her murder this morning.

He has also been charged in relation to the attempted murder of his father Henk Heyneman who was admitted to Cavan General on Saturday night and his condition is said to be serious but stable. The suspect appeared before Judge Raymond Finnegan just before 10am this morning. He had been in Garda custody since his arrest was made late on Saturday night.

It is understood his period of questioning was paused to allow for medical treatment. He made no reply to the charges when they were put to him.

Mr Heyneman dressed in a black hoodie and blue jeans appeared in front of Judge Raymond Finnegan. It’s understood that he attacked his parents at the family home on Derrycasan Lane before leaving the scene to raise the alarm in a takeaway in Ballyconnell about 5kms away. There he asked for Gardai and an ambulance to attend his family home and on arrival Gardai found Annie had been killed and her husband Henk fighting for his life in a serious condition.

Detective Sergeant Sharon Walsh from Cavan Garda Station said in court that she arrested Mr Heyneman at 9:45 pm last night, Tuesday January 14th in relation to the murder and then charged him with murder at 10:43 pm. He made no reply after being cautioned to both charges at Cavan Garda Station he replied no comment on both charges.

There was no application for bail as the district court has no jurisdiction to consider bail on a murder charge.

However, solicitor Damien Rudden made an application for his client to be remanded to Castlerea Prison.

This application was declined by Judge Raymond Finnegan, who remanded Danny Heyneman in custody to Cloverhill Prison to appear before Cavan District Court via videolink on Friday.
