The committee at Fairgreen Community Centre near Cootehill in Cavan have lodged an application for planning permission for the major refurb of St Michael's Hall. According to the application, the committee at Fairgreen hope to develop a sports hall to the rear of St Michael's Hall, which is a listed building.
The application states the community group wishes to demolish the non-original extensions to the side and rear of the building and construct a new extension to provide a sports hall to the north east of the building with ancillary accommodation over two storeys. St Michael's Hall was built in 1905 and is a landmark in Munnilly.
Recent events at the centre have included a Santa's Grotto, concert and a treasure hunt during heritage week. A public consultation on the redevelopment plans was also held in the hall. Despite being extended and re-roofed in the recent past, it was decided to form a group of local people who would dedicate themselves to the redevelopment of the building for future generations.
A social media post from the group said they are "aiming for a state of the art community centre full of useful facilities for the community." St Michael's Hall has already received €17,000 in funding from Bailieborough and Cootehill Municipal District. It will be some weeks before a decision is expected from Cavan County planners. In the meantime, anyone who would like to support the development of St. Michael's Hall can donate on cootehill.ie
