Mairead McGuinness unlikely to be nominated for EU Commission - McConnell

It’s believed local MEP Mairead McGuinness is unlikely to be nominated as Ireland’s next EU Commissioner.

She’s among three Fine Gael politicians being discussed as potential replacements for Phil Hogan.

Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney is believed to be the favourite for nomination with MEP Frances Fitzgerald also being mentioned.

Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has asked for a female and a male nominee to be sent.

Mairead McGuinness has said she’s interested in the position but speaking on The Wider View today, Political Editor Daniel McConnell said despite her experience at EU level, she’s unlikely to get the job:
