A screening of the Lyra McKee documentary titled 'Lyra' will take place this Friday at the Garage Theatre in Monaghan. The Northern Irish journalist was murdered by the new IRA back in April 2019.
Siobhan Sheerin is the Vice-Principal of Beech Hill College and is also Secretary of the Clones Film Festival Committee and has held that role for the last 20 years.
Speaking to Northern Sound in relation to the documentary which was previously screened at the Clones Film Festival in October, Siobhan said in all her 20 years she has never been so "moved" or "inspired" by a piece of work.
As a result, she is encouraging as many people as possible to turn out and support the screening and celebrate the life and legacy of the late Lyra McKee.
Siobhan continued; "It’s about her life, struggles and how she wanted to champion people who were disadvantaged and needed a voice. The documentary was previously screened during the Clones Film Festival in October, and after the screening Lyra’s sister Nichola was there and conducted a Q&A. The audience were so moved and had so many questions about Lyra, about how she grew up and her quest for justice.
"I really would encourage people to attend it and I would encourage parents who have teenagers to bring them along. It is really inspirational and shows how the North is still dealing with the consequences of the troubles and how we need to assist people's quests for justice. It's just a wonderful documentary and really inspiring so I hope a good crowd from Monaghan will go this Friday, February 24th at 8pm."
Lyra's sister Nichola and Film Director Alison Millar who was a close friend of the journalist will be available after the screening on Friday night for a Q&A session with audience members.
