'Lyra was using journalism to give a voice to people who didn’t have one'

Two separate screenings of the award-winning 'Lyra' McKee documentary took place today at the Garage Theatre in Monaghan. The final screening will take place tonight at 8pm and is open to the general public.

Film Director Alison Millar and Lyra's sister Nichola will also be in attendance to answers questions from the audience afterwards in relation to the Northern Irish journalist who was murdered by the new IRA back in April 2019. The documentary was previously screened at the Clones Film Festival back in October.

Speaking to Northern Sound ahead of tonight’s event, Lyra’s sister Nichola said she was ‘overwhelmed’ by the support the film received when it was previously screened at the Clones Film Festival back in October.

With its return to Monaghan due to popular demand, Nichola said it is a “wonderful show of solidarity” that the people of Monaghan want to bring Lyra into their hearts.

Nichola continued; “I think it’s really wonderful that people have taken Lyra into their hearts and they have wanted to meet the person behind the terrible headlines and the terrible tragedy. I think that it's a wonderful show of solidarity that the people of Monaghan have really brought Lyra into their hearts and want to get to know her a little bit better.

"We had a phenomenal response at the Clones Film Festival. People have been very moved by the experience of getting to know Lyra, and they're very grateful that this film has given them the opportunity to do that.

“Lyra was always very curious about everything. She was always asking why and really wanted to understand people and the way the world works. She was much more interested in the ordinary person and was a champion for those who needed a voice.

“Lyra was using journalism to give a voice to people who didn’t have one, people who were marginalised or who were ignored. Lyra knew that she had a voice and that she should use it where she could to make thing better for other people and we’re still enabling that through this film. We’re still trying to help people see things a little bit differently so that things can become better for them.”
