Locals across Cavan and Monaghan have been advised to be “aware” of algal blooms. The toxic bacteria may appear as a green scum in local lakes during this time of year.
In a statement issued to the public, Cavan County Council has warned members of the public to be aware of algal blooms. According to the local authority, locals must avoid any contact with algal blooms as they are an irritant and can be toxic if ingested.
Members of the public are also advised to keep dogs away from any affected shorelines as they are particularly sensitive to these blooms, which often present as a coloured scum on the surface of water.
Meanwhile, owners who let their dogs into Lough Muckno have been advised that there is quite a lot of green algae in the water at the present time.
