A Cavan woman who has been running an animal sanctuary in the Virginia area for the past 28 years is urging people not to gift a pet at Christmas. Maire Egan of the Kitten Cottage Animal Sanctuary has been housing stray animals including wildlife for the past 28 years and says she has never been busier. During that time, Maire estimates she has housed 11,000 cats abandoned in the Cavan area.
The busiest periods for the sanctuary are immediately after Christmas and the school summer holidays. She says sanctuaries like hers are left to deal with the problem of unwanted pets when people realise what is involved.
