Gardaí in Co Cavan are encouraging locals to "lock up and light up" this winter. Garda Lisa Stephens of Bailieboro Garda Station issued the warning following a spate of burglaries which were reported across the region over the last month. Speaking to Northern Sound, Garda Stephens stressed that properties in darkness are more prone to attacks as opposed to a house which is well lit up.
Garda Stephens is also encouraging locals not to keep large amounts of cash in the house and to take pictures of all items of jewellery so that it's easily identified if stolen and recovered. She also stressed the importance of not advertising that your home is vacant on social media, particularly in the lead-up to the festive period. Garda Stephens explained; "If you're out and about in the lead-up to Christmas, please do not post this on social media and do not advertise that your house is vacant on social media. If your house is to be vacant for holidays, family weddings or even funerals please let us know. Patrols can be scheduled for an area where a number of houses may be vacant. If we all work together we will have safer communities."
