Members of Monaghan Sinn Fein are calling on the Government to provide a "relief scheme" and "financial supports" for small businesses and for those who have suffered damage to residential and commercial property as a result of the "unprecedented destruction" caused by Storm Éowyn. Monaghan Sinn Fein are also calling on Government to issue additional funding to local authorities to assist with the clean up and repair of infrastructure and roads throughout the county.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Deputy Cathy Bennett commended the ESB, council staff, Uisce Éireann and everyone who has been "putting their back" to the wheel to get the work done. Deputy Bennett believes that in this day and age, damage to this extent would not be occurring if the proper infrastructure was put in place. She believes that Government must "step up to the mark" in order to improve infrastructure right across the county.
Deputy Bennett said; "In this day and age, we're in 2025 and I do believe that powerlines should be undergrounded. This should not be occurring and if the proper infrastructure was put in place people wouldn't be sitting at home in 2025 freeing cold in houses. It's not good planning on the governments behalf and proper infrastructure is needed."
