The penalties are in place with an aim to target the misuse of illegal fireworks, particularly on Halloween, when activity is at its most popular.

Gardaí are reminding the public of the criminal penalties of possessing or launching illegal fireworks ahead of Halloween festivities. Fines up to €10,000 and 5 years’ imprisonment could be applied for having fireworks with an intent to sell or if convicted for throwing an ignited firework at a person or property. However some bonfires and firework displays will be organised, monitored and licensed for this evenings celebrations.

Inspector Ciaran Nunan, from the Garda National Community Engagement Bureau, says illegal fireworks pose a real threat; "Illegal fireworks have a massive risk to them. They're unlicensed, they're unregulated. You don't know what's in them so they're incredibly volatile and dangerous. For people's own safety the best thing to do is stay away from them."
