Death notices website RIP.ie will begin charging funeral directors to add a listing from January. It has been operating as a free service for 19 years, however a bill of €100 will apply next month. The website was bought by the Irish Times group earlier this year.
Colm Kieran from Kieran Brothers Funeral Directors in Kingscourt, Co Cavan says some families may choose not to pay, and use social media instead; "What you do see now is that funeral directors are starting to publish on their own platforms. You'll notice across the country funeral directors are taking en masse to having their own Facebook and Instagram pages where they can still continue to provide an online free of charge method by which they can publish a funeral notice for their community so there are free options still out there."
