A Northern Irish woman who has lived in Monaghan for over 60 years until this summer has been left shocked to find she is not eligible to vote in this general election. When she was searching around for a new house on this side of the border recently, Margaret couldn't find anything suitable and eventually settled on a house in the North. Margaret told the Joe Finnegan Show the housing situation in the Republic forced her hand and now she feels disenfranchised. In order to be eligible to vote in Ireland you must be either an Irish or British citizen, be resident in Ireland, over 18 and registered.
In order to register to vote on the website check-the-register-dot-ie, You need a PPS number and Eircode. When Margaret checked the voter register she found she had been removed off it and couldn't re-register because she no longer lives at an address with an Irish Eircode. She lives just seven minutes or 12 miles away from her home of six decades albeit in a different jurisdiction but still works in the Republic and has paid taxes into the Irish state since the age of 17. Margaret said she always used her vote when she lived in Monaghan but now feels "let down."
