Members of the Monaghan Women's Assembly are running a 'Meet Your Local Political Parties' event which will take place at the Westenra Hotel in Monaghan town tonight.
The event which kicks-off at 7pm, aims to showcase all political parties and give them the opportunity to come and meet the women of Co Monaghan County Council.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Sinn Fein's Cathy Bennett said members of the assembly like herself are "hopeful" that tonight's event will encourage local women to join a political party or perhaps consider running as a candidate in the next general election.
Cllr Bennett highlighted how women are in the "minority" when it comes to politics across Monaghan. She believes it is essential for women of all ages to have their say, when it comes to discussing important issues.
"We're tying to encourage more women through the Monaghan Women's Assembly to become involved in local politics," explained Cllr Bennett. "It doesn't mean you have to stand in the election, it just means that you can come on board and support the females who have put their names forward. Tonight's event is to get people to come, meet the political parties and see if they would have an interest in joining a party."
