Castleblayney College students Hannah and Caoimhe Quinn were extremely successful at the recent BT Young Scientist & Technology exhibition which was held in the RDS, Dublin. Twins Hannah and Caoimhe Quinn placed first in the intermediate Biological and Ecological category and were also awarded the very prestigious 'Agmen' Biological and Ecological Award. Their project was titled - Shading The Future: Analysing the cellular and genetic responses of cellulose and DNA to Ultraviolet Light.
According to the twins, this was an investigation into the protection of DNA by creating a cellulose film derived from seaweed potentially blocking ultraviolet light from our eyes. Speaking to Northern Sound following their double gold win, the third year students said they are "delighted" with the support they have received since the exhibition. Both Hannah and Caoimhe hope that their project findings will have a lasting impact on society and one day be turned into a product.
