Well-known GAA commentator from Cavan, Mike Tynan, has paid his own tribute to his colleague and friend, Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh. Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh passed away at the age of 93 yesterday. The Kerry man commentated on GAA games for RTÉ since 1949 until his retirement in 2010.
Former Northern Sound sports broadcaster, Mike Tynan, shared the commentary box with the giant of GAA punditry many times. Mike told the Joe Finnegan Show that although the RTÉ man will be known as the voice of the GAA, for his encyclopaedic knowledge of hurling and Gaelic football and his distinctive voice, the man away from the mic was kind and giving of his time.
"We worked on getting Micheál to Cavan as the Lurgan U-14's had won the league and he arrived down on the night to present the medals," explained Mike. "He did a wonderful job and when he started off he said there was two Lurgan's in Ireland, one in Armagh and one in Cavan and that's just the kind of person he was."
