A local Trans Activist says moving away from Cavan helped with her transition.
Victoria van der Spek says that while things have improved there is still a long way to go to establish understanding and support for transgender people, particularly in more rural areas where services are lacking.
She says that she was lucky to have people around her who were supportive when she came out and that for anyone struggling social transitioning, by changing your name or pronouns, can positively impact your mental health.
Victoria was speaking to Shannonside Northern Sound on the final day of Pride Month and said that there is still a lot of work to do, with many Trans people in Ireland still experiencing regular harassment:
