Local third-level rep says regional towns need supports to tackle rising accommodation costs

A 2016 report found an additional €1 billion a year would be needed to fund higher education by 2030.

A local third-level students' representative says more needs to be done to tackle the accommodation crisis in regional towns.

USI Vice-President for the Border Midlands and West Victor McLoughlin was speaking as the union cautiously welcomed expected new government commitments on funding.

Changes to student grants are being discussed at cabinet this evening.

The Minister for Higher Education has brought proposals to government on increased investment in third-level education.

A 2016 report found an additional 1-billion euro a year would be needed to fund higher education by 2030.

The expert group study says the money is needed due to population growth and to reduce student to staff ratios.

Speaking on The Wider View, Victor McLoughlin said it's not just students in Dublin that are feeling the pinch.
