A local TD says the incident that saw a garda being injured in the line of duty in Cootehill on Tuesday demonstrates the dangers and risks the job involves.
Deputy Niamh Smyth has wished the garda in question a full and speedy recovery. The Garda suffered a number of injuries after he tried to give medical attention to a man in the Cootehill area at around midday on Tuesday afternoon.
It's understood the Garda was treated at the scene and remained on duty. A man aged in his 50's was detained under the Mental Health Act and was subsequently released without charge.
A file will now be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions. Deputy Smyth says this attack on Garda highlights the dangers and challenges of the role of An Garda Síochána on a daily basis in the community.
