Local Fianna Fáil TD Niamh Smyth has welcomed plans to establish a special school in Monaghan to cater for students with Special Educational Needs.
The news was confirmed to Deputy Smyth by her party colleague and Minister for Education Norma Foley.
This new special school for Monaghan will cater for children and young people with complex special education needs up to 18 years of age.
According to Deputy Smyth, the school is being sanctioned as early as possible as part of advanced forward planning for the next school year to ensure that appropriate placements are available where needed to meet the needs of students with special needs.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Deputy Smyth said she was pleased to see progress made in meeting the needs of young people from the area:
Deputy Smyth said; "I along with Minister Foley have met with parents and groups across the county and having given a commitment that this would be resolved before the end of the year, I am delighted to say Fianna Fáil in Government has delivered on that promise. I am pleased that we are making real progress in meeting the needs of our young people and collaborating in new ways to ensure every child has access to a welcoming and inclusive environment to learn and flourish."
