"Promoting participation in sport across local communities is hugely important." That's according to local TD Niamh Smyth who welcomed funding of over €145,000 which was allocated to Cavan's and Monaghan's Local Sports Partnership (LSP). Co Cavan is set to receive €82,500 and Monaghan will receive €60,000 under a fund designed to support the installation of barrier-free outdoor sport infrastructure for public use in local community settings.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Deputy Niamh Smyth said she was delighted that this fund focuses on the grassroots of local communities to boost participation levels. She said she is "confident" that it will complement the tremendous community good that is already delivered under both the Community Sport Facilities Fund and the Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund.
In Cavan the funding will be used for two 3v3 basketball courts and low level lighting around the courts to encourage all year round activity, two outdoor picnic chess tables and two youth 'hang out' benches, two outdoor soccer table and matted areas in Morrisey Park in Belturbet and Con Smith Park in Cavan Town. In Monaghan, funding will be used for a 3 v 3 basketball court and sports equipment storage unit at Lough Muckno and at Ballybay Town park, a concrete outdoor table tennis table at Ballybay and a multi use play area at Rossmore Park.
