Gardai from Cavan and Monaghan were deployed to assist in bringing calm to Dublin City last night. It followed 7 vehicles being damaged by fire, including 3 buses, 3 Garda patrol cars and a Luas tram.
8 other Garda vehicles were extensively damaged while 13 properties were attacked causing extensive damage. A number of Gardaí were also injured during the course of the rioting, with one member of the force hospitalised with serious injuries.
Cavan Monaghan TD, Deputy Niamh Smyth says social media giants need to do more when it comes to spreading of misinformation and information about planned riots like what were witnessed last night, Deputy Smyth says that she was asked to leave Leinster House along with her other colleagues when the news was breaking that riots were underway in the city.
"News started to filter through quickly that riots were breaking out in the city centre, that it was becoming more dangerous to be around the city centre and we were advised to leave Leinster House in the early evening," Niamh Smyth said, "Small inconvenience as it was for me to leave Leinster House, traffic was backed up, it took two hours to get from Leinster House to just Blackrock. But, when I did get back home and watched the 9 o'clock news and saw the horrific sights - anarchy in our city."
