Cavan Monaghan TD Matt Carthy has criticised Government TDs, whom he says, made a "shameful decision" to increase homelessness by ending the eviction ban.
The Government decided to end the ban - which had been protecting people from 'no fault' evictions - thus plunging many into homelessness within weeks .
The local deputy said every week he sees families who cannot afford to purchase their own home being left to the mercy of ever-rising rents and Government policies that are "devastating" lives in Monaghan and Cavan.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Deputy Carthy said Government TDs in this area have been silent and he called on them to come forward and explain to people across the region why they backed a move that will make families here homeless.
He added the housing crisis is now driving political change in Ireland.
"I think the overall approach to housing is going to cost the Government parties dearly. I think in the last General Election it was clear that people wanted change. That change and the desire for change was largely driven by the housing crisis.
"The decisions that have been made will only exacerbate that. And, the situation has gotten much worse; and the people affected by the crisis have become much broader. There was a time when we spoke about homeless, we were speaking about people with addiction issues; now the people who I know that are homeless are working families," Deputy Carthy said.
