Use of the Irish language is stronger in Monaghan than Cavan, according to a local TD.
While Monaghan has three Gaelscoileanna, Cavan only has two.
Monaghan also boasts an Irish-speaking secondary school but, Cavan cannot.
Sinn Féin Cavan-Monaghan TD Pauline Tully says despite the disparity both counties need more financial and political support to encourage the use of the language more.
"If you don't use it, you lose it," the TD said.
She told Northern Sound that since the government in Stormont was suspended, the cross-border bodies charged with promoting the Irish language have also been suspended.
Deputy Tully has asked a minister of state at the Department of the Gaeltacht if anything can be done to support community groups who promote Irish in Cavan and Monaghan while Stormont is collapsed.
