The issue of the roll out of body cameras for rank and file Gardai has been highlighted once again by a local TD.
Deputy Niamh Smyth who is also a member of the justice committee says the need for them has been heightened locally following an attack on a Garda in Cavan in recent weeks.
The Garda suffered a number of injuries after he tried to give medical attention to a man in the Cootehill area.
It's understood the Garda was treated at the scene and remained on duty.
A man aged in his 50's was detained under the Mental Health Act and was subsequently released without charge.
A file is now being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Deputy Smyth says body cams for members of An Garda Siochana would act as a deterrent and offer protection to Gardai on the streets.
