A local TD has called on the "unique policing demands" of the border region to be taken into account.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Deputy Brendan Smith believes policing demands for Gardaí in the Cavan/Monaghan divisions must be taken into account when it comes to the allocation of Garda resources.
Deputy Smith believes that the army presence in the central border region also needs to be reviewed following the disastrous decision to close Dún Uí Barracks in Cavan.
As a result, he is calling on the Garda Commissioner and the Justice Minster to create viable solutions when it comes to meeting the demands of security policing across the border region.
"We have a long border with Northern Ireland, which creates extra demands in respect of security and policing, and I don't think that is often enough factored in by the Garda authorities at national level when they're allocating personnel and resources," Deputy Smith explained.
"It's an issue that I will always continue to highlight and we should never be complacent about the border region, as there is still criminality circulating."
