Cavan-Monaghan TD Matt Carthy said when it comes to the conflict between Israel and Palestine "world leaders must call for a ceasefire on all sides".
Comparing what is happening in the region today to the conflict in Ireland, the Sinn Féin spokesperson on foreign affairs said "the truth of the matter is there will not be a military victory".
The deputy acknowledged the Hamas attack on Israel on the 7th October was "absolutely horrendous, terrorist and unjustified".
It also "breached international law" he said.
He added, however, that "Israel has broken international law not only every day since, but virtually for decades on end."
"What we need to see happen is world leaders to call for a ceasefire on all sides," Mr Carthy told the Joe Finnegan Show, "That means Hamas need to release their hostages and that Israel needs to stop the bombardment."
The local TD added that he was "very proud" that the Dáil was the first parliament in the world to call for a ceasefire.
The opposition politician said if either Hamas or the Israeli state try to eliminate the other "the only outcome will be a prolonged and bloodier conflict than what we've seen".
Meanwhile, Cavan County Councillor John Paul Feeley waded in to the debate on Shannonside Northern Sound to say Sinn Féin's comparison to what happened in this country to what is happening in Israel and the Gaza Strip today is "false"
"The objective of Hamas," Councillor Feeley said, "is the total destruction of the state of Israel and to convert everyone to the Muslim faith.
"They are not a group you can negotiate with in the normal sense.
"They do not have sensible or legitimate political objectives," the Fianna Fáil politician said.
