With schools now approaching the summer holidays, attention is turning to the junior cert and leaving cert exams which begin next week. Irish is a subject that always comes up for discussion in regards to its relevance to the modern education cycle.
Local TY students who attended a course recently at Northern Sound wanted to discuss this very topic. As a result, TY students Caolan McGinn and Amy Hannon examined the way Irish is taught in schools and if students found it to be effective.
According to Caolan and Amy, the pair experienced a "wide range" of different responses and views from local students in relation to Irish language as a subject.
In relation to their findings, one student told them, "It depends on how I'm learning the subject. I really love hearing people speak Irish but I don't like the grammar side of it."
Whilst another student explained, "People don't speak it day to day, so there must be something wrong which is making people from the age of 5 to 18 not speak it."
