A local student says it's "hard to keep sane" as a result of school closures and confusion over the Leaving Cert.

Daniel Madden is a student in Our Lady's Secondary School in Castleblayney and he hopes students are given a choice in whether they sit traditional exams or receive calculated grades.

The ASTI has pulled out of negotiations on the Leaving Cert, citing concerns about calculated grades.

The teaching union is meeting with Minister for Education Norma Foley in a bid to resolve the dispute but says that's not a guarantee it will re-enter negotiations.

Daniel told Shannonside Northern Sound that Leaving Cert students should have "freedom" to decide what they want to do:
