A local Sinn Féin TD says letting inflation dictate rental prices is very concerning.
Previously there was a cap of 4 percent rises per year however, Minister for Housing Darragh O'Brien, has made changes which mean now landlords will only be able to increase rent by as much as inflation went up in the previous 12 months.
While he believes this change will help bring stability to the market, Deputy Pauline Tully says inflation is already high and the details of this need to be made clear.
Sinn Féin currently has their ban on rent increases bill moving through the Dáil which calls for a rent freeze for three years.
Deputy Tully says people are being asked to pay 'extortionate rates' for properties:
