Sinn Féin members of Monaghan County Council have passed a motion calling for a feasibility study to be carried out on the provision of Irish language packing on consumer goods.
The Council will now send the proposal to Tourism Minister Catherine Martin and Tanaiste Leo Varadkar.
At a recent county council meeting, Pat Treanor said it would "promote the Irish language in a visible and accessible way".
The motion also calls for additional funding to be provided to Irish businesses to ensure they don't "suffer from the cost of translation, design, or development".
A similar motion from Fianna Fáil's John Paul Feeley was also passed by Cavan County Council at a recent meeting.
