"It is every road user's responsibility to save families the trauma of losing a loved one on our roads." That's according to Sergeant Mick Duffy in relation to road fatalities across Cavan and Monaghan.
In light of the tragedies seen on local roads in recent weeks, Sergeant Duffy believes it is "only right" to bring road safety to the fore.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Sergeant Duffy who is also the Crime Prevention Officer for Cavan/Monaghan revealed that deaths are up 25 per cent from the same date last year.
According to the local sergeant, every road user has a responsibility for road safety, whether you are a driver, cyclists or pedestrian.
Sergeant Duffy said that we "all know" of the impact such tragedies have on our local communities, adding that it is imperative for drivers to slow down and always think about road safety.
"Drivers please be conscious of your speed and the speed limit you are driving within," he explained. "It is every road users responsibility to save families the trauma of losing a loved one on the roads, so please slow down and think about road safety.
"Every road user has a responsibility of road safety, whether you are a driver, cyclists or pedestrian. Drivers please be cautious of your speed, always obey road markings and only overtake when safe to do so. Cyclists must also be aware of their surroundings at all times, meanwhile it is important for walkers to always wear high-visibility and to always pay attention at busy junctions."
