A local Senator has called for the establishment of a national database for defibrillators.
Robbie Gallagher has written to the Health Minister, Stephen Donnelly, seeking the implementation of the measure.
He says many defibrillators can't be accessed in time because people on the scene don't know where they are or how to access them, and it's vital this information is easily and quickly available.
And while Senator Gallagher labels the devices "fool-proof and easy to operate", he's called for them to be maintained and regularly checked.
His proposal would document every AED in the country, complete with Eircode, and the information would be available to the general public through an app which would pinpoint the nearest serviced AED.
