Local schools encouraged to take part in 'Safer Internet Day'

Jane says 'Safer Internet Day' is a great opportunity for schools to do something creative with many schools already involved across the region.

'Safer Internet Day' supported by Coimisiún na Meán will take place next Tuesday on the 11th of February. The theme of this year is 'Prepare / Protect / Thrive: Navigating Algorithms & Influencers'. Jane McGarrigle is from Co Fermanagh works for Webwise. Speaking on today's Joe Finnegan Show, Jane revealed that this year's theme is focused on children and young people who she says make up a large proportion of internet users.

According to Jane, 26 percent of children in Ireland have encountered harmful content online. With access to so much information, Jane says the the aim of this year is to explore how to protect and empower children and young people and to navigate the opportunities and challenges of these powerful online influences.
