A local publican and councillor is concerned that making public drinking an offence in reaction to scenes of large gatherings at the weekend may put pressure on the gardaí.
This comes on the back of concerns over the growing number of cases nationally in the last number of days, as well as videos on social media showing groups of people drinking on the streets in Cork and Dublin.
Independent councillor in Cavan Brendan Fay says that the situation has divided people, describing what he saw as euphoria from people who have been unable to socialise for months.
However, he says laws prohibiting this would fall to the Gardaí to enforce, and their teams are already stretched.
