Parents and grandparents across the Cavan Monaghan region are being advised to cut down on treats for the kids.
The next phase of the START campaign from Safefood, the HSE, and Healthy Ireland has just been launched.
It is focused on treats and providing the whole family with practical advice on how to manage their reduction.
Speaking on this afternoon's Wider View, Joana Dasilba - a HSE Specialist in Nutrition highlighted how junk food is high in calories and provides no essential nutrients for growth and development.
She added the placement of these products in supermarkets makes it easy for parents and extended family members to put the food into their trolleys.
Ms Dasilba says cutting back is good progress.
She advised that if a child gets three treats at the weekend for example, cut one out and reduce it to two,
"There is no bad food or good food," Ms Dasilba continued.
"There are different quantities of the food groups that we should consider.
"Definitely we need more fruit and vegetables.
"We also need more good proteins - from fish, from meat from eggs.
"Then we look at treat foods, there is room for everything."
